I was glad to see this response from him. Once I got under the umbrella of Paleo/Primal etc., I discovered that many people were there for differing reasons and via some varying methods. Of course, there’re the Paleo Diet folks who are into low fat, lean meats for some reason. And there has been a lot of back-and-forth in the Twitterverse recently about some controversial blog posts that seem to be backing off support of fat.

For my part, as many of you already know, I came to Primal via Gary Taubes and his high-fat, low carb recommendations. So it has always made sense to me to go for the fat. Anytime I get a twinge of hunger at a strange time or an urge to demolish a pie, I know to extinguish it with fat. For me, a few slices of fatty salami  are enough to get me through any craving. I know that if I’ve gotten hungry, chances are, I didn’t eat enough fat with my last meal. Also, whenever the scale ticks up a bit, maybe because of an unavoidable pizza night with our vegetarian friends, I know that going whole-hog (pun intended) is the bona fide way to get it back down. You simply can’t overeat the stuff, and besides, it’s tasty.

So Mark’s post might validate your current WOE or make you think twice about that chicken breast. Either way, could you please pass the bacon?

  1. There are paleo people who are afraid of fat?!? I didn’t know that. I sometimes prefer leaner cuts of meat for texture – I definitely prefer white meat when it comes to poultry. But overall, fat is what makes everything taste good! Do you pay attention to your macronutrient ratios? I try to eat about 60% fat, 15-20% carbs, and 20% protein. And my favorite snack is hot coppa, which I think is fattier than salami.

    I’m glad I stumbled across your blog, I’ll be reading through it today!

    • Crazy, right?! I don’t know what’s going on, but folks just gotta disagree about something, I guess.

      I don’t pay attention to ratios or anything like that. It’s partly the ease of all of this that appeals to me and has made it so easy to follow. As mentioned, I approach every meal wondering how I can get fat involved. :)

    And I am sitting here giggling because I just realized I was drooling and fantasizing over that pic like a 10 year old with a Tiger Beat magazine. LOL

    • Right?! I think the photo said something about a traditional holiday English lamb roast or something. But maybe it doesn’t matter as long as there’s delicious grass-fed FAT involved! :)
